By all accounts, Tufts’ long-anticipated Fossil Fuel Divestment Teach-In, on January 24, 2013, was a rousing success. Current undergraduates, faculty, alumni, and Tufts Community Union Senators alike all came out to learn about divestment from the experts, and to have them field questions and comments.
Bob Massie, president and CEO of the New Economics Institute, spoke on the urgency of the climate problem, and the cruciality of the national divestment campaign. Shoshana Blank, of the Sustainable Endowments Institute, lectured us on the options for feasible and profitable re-investment options. Lastly, Professor Julian Agyeman, from the Tufts Urban and Environmental Policy and Planning Department and Graduate School, highlighted the importance of diversity within our movement, and on recognizing that climate change is fundamentally a matter of human rights and social justice.
